THE UNIVERSITY AND ENVIRONMENT
Michigan State University is an AAU, land-grant, research 1 university and NCAA Division 1A institution. It enrolls approximately 46,000 students on the East Lansing campus. Approximately three-quarters of all students are undergraduates; there are slightly more females than males and about 20% of the undergraduate population self-identified as a being from one of the five recognized underrepresented racial/ethnic categories. MSU is proud of efforts it has made toward retention that have yielded higher than national average second year returning student rates for the overall freshman body and retention rates for minority freshmen of color at, or above, 80% since 1995. The University is an equal opportunity institution that offers baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees in a variety of fields, including four medical colleges.
